CULLMAN, Ala. – Lovers of all things spooky will have an opportunity to attend a special event featuring a variety of horror-themed crafts this year at Dodge City Tattoo Company. The tattoo shop will host its first Halloween Art and Oddities Market Saturday, Oct. 15, from noon-6 p.m.

Vendors will have Halloween-inspired arts and crafts made by local artists including jewelry, paintings, sculptures, crochet taxidermy and outsider art.

Dodge City Tattoo Company Owner John Riendeau said the shop hosted a similar event pre-COVID-19 that was well received by the town of Dodge City as well as the vendors and visitors.

“The inspiration for this came from our previous market we had in 2018 as well as our love for the Halloween season.  I’ve done art outside of tattooing for a number of years and have participated in festivals and shows such as comic-cons as a vendor in artist alley as well as various art festivals and pop-up shows at the Birmingham Punk Rock Art Show. The goal for this event is to make it an annual thing that attracts people of all ages that have a special love for the spooky season,” said Riendeau.

Approximately 25 vendors are signed up already, including some bakeries and a pop-up barbecue stand. Riendeau said the event is currently at capacity for vendors.

“When we first put out the call for vendors, we received an overwhelming amount of requests from artists and craftspeople from all over the place,” he said. “I wish I could let everyone that wanted to set up come out, but my space here is limited.”

Dodge City Tattoo Company will have special deals on several designs, all Halloween/horror-related, for $31 each. The designs will be posted at www.facebook.com/dodgecitytattoocompany. The tattoos will be done on a first come, first served basis.

Riendeau said, “The main reason for not doing it closer to Halloween itself is that we didn’t want to interfere with any trunk-or-treat event that the church next door may put on. We try to be good neighbors to the surrounding businesses in our community. They have been gracious to allow us to use their parking lot in the past for our customers when we hold an event and in turn we try and reciprocate. We also didn’t want to make people choose between our event and taking their kids out trick or treating. The other reason is while Halloween is a one-day holiday, many see it as a season just like Christmas. There’s always month-long programming of classic scary movies during this time of year and people start to get excited in anticipation for dressing up, etc. There are always Christmas markets and festivals during that season, so we wanted to start something that was similar.”

Dodge City Tattoo Company is located at 501 Alabama Highway 69 S, Suite E, Hanceville, AL 35077.
