CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission held an emergency called meeting on Wednesday morning, which agenda included the approval of a resolution to utilize the County Annual Bids for County Road 18 Community Development Block Grant Project. The grant obtained for the project is for $400,000. Economic Development Director Bradley Williams stated that the bid for the contract was received just after the last meeting and so he wanted to go ahead and approve the resolution as soon as possible so that the contractors will have their purchase order and be able to schedule the work on County Road 18.

County Engineer Bryan Cheatwood stressed the urgency of the resolution. “This has been in the works for a while. We’ve already been working on some of the pipes and getting that road ready, but scheduling with these contractors with all these funds coming down, if we don’t get on their schedule early, we could be pushed back to where this will be done next year.”

The project will be taken on entirely by contractors so the road department can continue to work on their current projects.

Cheatwood said that right now the cement plants associated with this resolution are shut down and trying to expand to accommodate the increased demand. They expect to be back up running by mid-June to July which is when the contractors will begin work on the project.

Also approved was the annual Spring Clean Up “Free Dump Day” during the entire month of May. Cullman County residents will each receive a free trip to the dump. Certificates will be sent out in electric bills and will need to be filled out and presented at the dump. The landfill does not take paint, tires, batteries or hazardous materials.

The next commission meeting will be on May 17 at 6:00 p.m. The next work session will be at 4:00 p.m. in the Commission meeting room. The public is invited to attend.
