HANCEILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council on Thursday evening discussed several new ordinances. The Harrison Property Zoning, Broadway Group Property Zoning and JMBL Property Re-zoning hearings were set for Thursday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m.

The Police Department will be purchasing 15 Axon body cams at $700 apiece for every full-time officer and some part-time officers. The department has already been using generic body cams for years, but Chief Bob Long suggested upgrading to the Axon with funds from the 1033 military surplus program.

The council also plans to acquire 10 lots next to C.W. Day Park to extend the park.

Mayor Nail said, “We would like to acquire some property next to C.W. Day Park. The city currently owns eight lots behind CVS Pharmacy and C.W. Day Park. If we buy these 10 lots, that will give the city all that property within that area.” He also estimated the total area to be between eight and 10 acres. “We all know that’s not the best of land back in there. We might decide later just to build a walking trail going through there. That’s really about the only land that’s left to give the park a little bit of breathing space.”

Mayor Nail has been negotiating with the owner of the land for about a year. They reached an agreement of $17,000 for the lots. Since the big concert this year for Hanceville was cancelled, he suggested using the previously appropriated funds for the concert of $44,000 to go toward paying for the 10 lots. The council approved the motion and discussed the possibility of using the land to develop an RV park.

The MadeLyme 5K for Lyme Disease has been postponed. Organizer Becca Hill posted, “With a very heavy heart, the MadeLyme 5K is not going to happen in May. Grief is hard. Doing life without your soulmate is hard. Realizing you can’t do it all is hard. Having to say no to things you care about is hard. But I’ve come to realize, I have a bad habit of filling my life with busyness, so I don’t have to deal with the pain. Last year, I had my sidekick to help me. I need him. I’ve decided to postpone the 5K this year. It breaks my heart but I just can’t do it alone. I appreciate everyone who has reached out to support this race. Your love of our family means so much to me. Maybe I’ll start to learn to form committees, delegate and let others help rather than trying to control every detail. It’s not the end of this event, just a little longer to wait.”

The council will be paving the Senior Building parking lot for $22,847, Michelle Street for $43,420 and Green Briar Street for $14,726 utilizing a recent Cullman County road bid of $6,215,588 as a part of Fund 298 of the American Rescue Plan Act.

The Hanceville Civic center will be hosting Bama Blu-Grace gospel bluegrass with Cotton Picking Kids on Saturday, May 14 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are presold at City Hall for $5 and will be $10 at the door.

The next Hanceville Council Meeting will be on April 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
