HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville City Council met on January 27 to discuss a bid on modular jail cells from Maximum Security Systems for the new portion of the jail. The cells will cost $132,500. The mayor acknowledged that the council could have the cells built for a cheaper cost; however, he mentioned several advantages to the modular jail cells. “If 10 years from now, you say, ok we’ve got to do something different, you can go back and cut those loose from the plates on the floor. You can move them, you can turn them, you can haul them out of here.” The detention cells include a security door, four bunks, two seats, one table, a security light fixture and anti-ligature racks.

Bob Long mentioned that while the cells could be built for cheaper, “The doors themselves are like three grand a piece, so in the long run, labor wise, we are probably better off to go ahead and buy these things.” The cells will also provide a way to better separate the female and male inmates.

The Grilled Cheese Festival will be on May 28 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Commercial and Bangor streets will be closed for the event from 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The event will feature the German Axe company who will bring a mechanical bull, among other vendors. Vendor fees were waived for the event by the council.

His family will be there and his little boy.” Councilmember Jim Sawyer, the mayor and Chief Long will be speaking at the event. City hall will be close 15 till 2:00 p.m. so that the employees can go and pay their respects.
