WEST POINT, Ala. – West Point hosted Vinemont in a pair of county games Monday night and both Warriors teams were able to pick up wins over the Eagles. The Lady Warriors rolled past the Lady Eagles 77-53 while the Warriors held off a fourth-quarter comeback by the Eagles to pick up a 73-64 win.

West Point 77 – Vinemont 53 (Varsity Girls)

Laklin Shadix knocked down a shot down low to put West Point on the scoreboard. Vinemont’s Magdalen Burks knocked down a trey to give the Lady Eagles a 3-2 lead early in the first period. Back-to-back treys by Hallie Wheeler gave the Lady Warriors an 8-3 lead, but the Lady Eagles seemed to have an answer for every West Point basket for almost half of the first quarter. A Caroline Miller three made it a 13-10 game almost halfway through the opening period, but the Lady Warriors used the three ball to create some distance from them and the Lady Eagles. Ella Minck and Braelee Quinn each knocked down back-to-back threes to quickly push West Point’s lead to 27-10 late in the first period. Another Quinn trey and a Minck layup made it 32-12 and the Lady Warriors went into the second period with a 32-13 lead.

Whitney Quick drilled a trey to start out the second quarter for Vinemont and a pair of Burks free throws trimmed the deficit to 14 at 32-18. A Burks three made it 33-21 with less than five minutes to go in the first half, but Ryleigh Jones jump-started a 10-0 West Point run with five straight points and her trey to end the run helped increase their lead to 45-21. A Quinn trey and a Minck layup put West Point up 50-24 and they would go into the locker room with the 26-point lead.

Back-to-back layups by Quinn to start out the second half pushed the Lady Warrior lead up to 30 and they went on cruise control from there as West Point went on to win by a comfortable margin, 77-53.

Five West Point (9-4) players scored in double figures in the contest, led by Quinn, who finished with 18 points. Wheeler and Minck each added 13 points. Liberty Shadix ended up with 12 points and Jones added 10 points. For Vinemont (5-9), Burks finished with 18 points. Miller added 12 points and Carley Stephens ended up with eight points.

West Point 73 – Vinemont 64 (Varsity Boys)

Toby Hill hit a basket down low to put Vinemont on the scoreboard, but Cade Simmons drilled a three for West Point as that gave them a 3-2 lead early in the first period. Isaac Moody and Kix Johnson each hit a three to give the Eagles an 8-3 lead. An Andrew Lynn trey trimmed the deficit to just two at 8-6, but Colby Miller answered right back with one of his own from long range to make it a five-point game again. Another Lynn trey tied it up at 11 and the Warriors ended the first quarter strong as Kanen Trussell hit a layup, then got a huge steal and a layup to give them a 19-15 lead after one.

That momentum carried over into the second period as Sam Wheeler hit a layup to start a 10-0 West Point run and a pair of Jayden Laney free throws gave the Warriors a double-digit lead at 29-15 with 5:25 remaining in the first half. A Moody layup and a Miller free throw made it a 31-19 game with less than three minutes to go until halftime, but the Warriors built their lead back up to 14 on a Jay Lamar trey and West Point went into the half with a 38-24 lead.

Both teams traded baskets on their first two possessions of the second half before three free throws by Miller trimmed Vinemont’s deficit to 11 at 43-32. Five straight points by Kolten Perry helped stretch West Point’s lead to 48-32. Back-to-back baskets down low by Moody and Hill swiveled the Eagle deficit back down to 11 at 50-39, but baskets by Wheeler and a trey by Lynn helped the Warriors keep their lead in double figures for the rest of the quarter. West Point would go into the final period up, 58-44.

An Ashton Rodgers trey gave the Warriors a 61-47 lead, but behind Hill and Miller, Vinemont staged a furious rally to get back in the contest. Hill and Miller scored the Eagles’ next nine points as back-to-back baskets down low by Hill saw West Point’s lead get cut down to just five at 61-56 with less than five minutes to go in the contest. A Johnson trey made it a 62-59 game with a little over four minutes to go in the game, then he drilled another one from deep to make it a 64-62 game. But West Point made sure that they didn’t complete their comeback as Wheeler hit a layup and Lynn drilled a huge three to help push their lead to 69-62 with less than two minutes to go. The Warriors went on to win a huge game at home, 73-64.
