Veteran Memorial: James Richard Hawk

James Richard Hawk was born November 1, 1948 in Cullman County. He grew up in Hanceville with his parents, Tom D. and Margaret Ella Hawk. He enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1969 and served in Vietnam. 

Hawk earned the rank of Specialist Four and was a Communications Center Specialist attached to the 121st Signal Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He began his tour in Vietnam on August 25, 1969. 

In March of 1970, Spc. Hawk became ill and passed away on March 30 in the Binh Duong Province of South Vietnam. He was just 21 years old and left behind his young wife and daughter. 

SPC James R. Hawk is buried at Center Hill Cemetery in Cullman County. He is honored on Panel 12w, Line 60 of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. He is also honored on the Vietnam Memorial at Cullman’s Veterans Park.
