CULLMAN, Ala. — Kayla Thursby, 34, of Cullman, was re-arrested this week after a Cullman County grand jury upgraded charges against her in the 2016 death of Leslie Clements. Originally charged in 2018 with murder by strangulation or suffocation and first-degree theft of property, she was awaiting trial when she received additional charges of murder by administration of controlled substances, corpse abuse and reckless manslaughter in the same incident.

The two murder charges are for the same victim and take into account the condition of the body and the result of a drug screen. The reckless manslaughter charge can be considered as an alternative to the murder charges at trial.

Co-defendant Jerome Flanigan, 39, of Cullman, faces similar charges, though he was recently acquitted of an additional charge of arson in the case.

Thursby was released on a $45,000 bond paid partially in property and partially by a bonding service.
