CULLMAN, Ala. – After taking a hiatus in 2020, Vacation Bible School is back in full-swing and churches are extremely thankful to have the children back this summer. Many are returning or have returned to in-person VBS, while others are choosing to host online events.

Debbie Keaton, ministry associate with the East Cullman Baptist Association, said, “I’ve been chasing down decorations and getting them all switched out to different churches, but we are so so thankful and so blessed that we are able to have actual VBS this year. I think we had one church that had a true Vacation Bible School and several who had drive-thru VBS last year. So this is a huge blessing that we are back in gear with everything.”

Children look forward to attending VBS each year and the cancellation of last year’s events was crushing to not only the children, but the church staff and members who put much hard work and planning into the events. Keaton recalled, “When I had one of our churches call, they were just dropping left and right. One day, I hung up from one and I literally cried. Working in Bible school every year, I see the children who come and for many, this is the highlight of their summer. It was sad. Praise the Lord we are back again!”

This year, the East Cullman Baptist Association had approximately 24 churches who had or have scheduled VBS. There are several themes this year as many churches had already purchased the material for last year’s VBS before having to cancel. Last year’s theme was “Concrete & Crates” through Lifeway Christian Resources. This year’s Lifeway theme is “Destination Dig.”

Keaton explained, “Those are the Lifeway themes through Southern Baptist. Others choose other publishers. We have ‘Mystery Island,’ ‘Armor of God’ and ‘I Wonder.’ Those are just a few of the fun and educational themes this year.”

Iva Rodgers with the West Cullman Baptist Association said, regardless of the theme, “As long as it’s Bible School and does what it’s supposed to do, that’s OK.”
