CULLMAN, Ala.– RNR Search and Rescue, a recently-formed S&R team that serves Cullman and surrounding counties, is in need of donations and volunteers. For six months, the group has served the local community by undergoing search and rescue missions using canines (some trained to seek out all people in an area, others trained to sniff out specific individuals), horseback searchers, boats and ATVs. Each team sent out consists of two peoplea canine handler and a backup searcher-who provide basic first aid and medical care to found parties who may be injured or ill.

Assistant Chief Raetta Young, co-founder of the group, said that the group is in need of donations such as night vision gear, safety glasses and high visibility safety vests. Treasurer Danielle Carter said they are also in need of wilderness survival equipment such as compasses, pocket knives, signal mirrors and first aid gear. Both women said the group also is accepting monetary donations to pay for canine equipment like harnesses and leashes.

In addition to donations, RNR is looking for volunteers. Those interested in search and rescue missions who have boats, ATVs or broken horses can apply to help search on their vehicle of choice. Those who are interested in volunteering but not performing search and rescue can volunteer for training exercises for the canines, where all that is required is for volunteers to run and hide while the dogs practice locating them.

Cullman County residents with donations can contact Carter for drop-off information at 205362-8115, while Blount County residents can contact Young at 337912-0013. Both women may also be contacted to inquire about volunteer opportunities.
