HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Wallace State Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Alpha Chi Tau Chapter has been named a 2021 REACH Rewards Chapter.

The REACH program recognizes and rewards Phi Theta Kappa chapters excelling in membership development. Specific chapters earn REACH status if they meet or exceed a 15 percent membership acceptance rate.

“Since Dr. Sivley and I have been advisors for Alpha Chi Tau at Wallace State, our acceptance percentages have been one of our chapter’s strong points,” said Wallace State math instructor and PTK co-sponsor Brandon Smith.

Math instructor and department chair Stacey Sivley also serves as a PTK sponsor.

For earning REACH Chapter status, Wallace State will receive 17 PTK graduation stoles that can be distributed to chapter officers or members and worn at graduation.

More than 112,500 students across the world became PTK members in 2020.

“Being a REACH chapter is more important this year than ever before, as Phi Theta Kappa worked to support community college students in completely unfamiliar circumstances,” PTK President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner said. “Racial and political unrest and a global pandemic made 2020 the most challenging year in recent history — one that our students, chapters and partner colleges worked exceptionally hard to overcome. Although this is a chapter award, it demonstrates that students are more focused on their futures than ever before, and their colleges are providing the opportunities to get them there — even amid a global pandemic.”

Wallace State’s Alpha Chi Tau chapter also earned a national Hallmark Award in 2020 and is a 5-star achiever, the highest recognition within PTK. The Hallmark Award is one of the highest awards attainable each year and was earned after the group sponsored a middle school math tournament as its annual PTK Distinguished College Project, welcoming 24 teams to campus.
