HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville E-911 will soon be getting new equipment to help streamline its current system, thanks to a $90,000 grant from the Cullman County E-911 Board of Commissioners’ Grant Program for 2021.

The council said the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, City of Cullman and Cullman Emergency Medical Services also qualified for grants. The projects will include, according to the E-911 Board of Commissioners, “equipment, software, installation and up to one year support to provide consoles capable of toning/alerting units for incoming 911 information.”

Hanceville 911 Communications- Corrections Division Supervisor Blake Burns explained, “We have two consoles here, so we have been awarded up to $90,000 to purchase these consoles that are capable of toning fire departments. It does make it faster, and as far the County, we will all be on the same operating system.”

Hanceville purchased two stationary and three mobile positions that the City said will increase communication capabilities while improving response to situations including natural disasters.

The council approved Resolution 649 to participate in the 2021 Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday the weekend of Feb.26-28. More information on the items included in the tax-free holiday can be found at https://revenue.alabama.gov/sales-use/sales-tax-holidays/

After a public hearing with no comments or concerns from the public or the council, the council approved Ordinance 631 to rezone the Nguyen property located at the corner of Kentucky Avenue and Commercial Street from B1(Business) to R1 (Residential). Why the property, which has been the location of a home for many years, was zoned B1 is “a bit of a mystery,” according to the council.

The council thanked the Hanceville Civitans for their hard work and dedication to the city of Hanceville with the organization of this year’s Cullman County Christmas Parade as well as the Hanceville Christmas Tree Lighting and Tinsel Trail at Veterans Memorial Park.

The next Hanceville City Council meeting will be Monday, Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
