SOUTH VINEMONT, Ala.- The South Vinemont Town Council on Tuesday night passed the Town’s 2020-2021 budget, with expected expenditures of $549,095.40. Councilwomen Sonya Mabry Adams and Bonnie Goodwin were absent, while incoming council members Chris Thompson and Sonya Copeland were in attendance.

Mayor Radginal Dodson said of the new budget, “It’s close. It doesn’t change much from last year’s.”

The council also approved the replacement of a drainage pipe at the sports complex. Recent rains combined with silt runoff have caused drainage problems for the complex, as well as the Shaddix Company property that is currently under construction.

“The silt washed in off the road and covered that pipe up,” explained Dodson. “It stopped the 3-foot pipe up and it’s 300 foot long.”

The mayor said Shaddix will do whatever is necessary to keep debris from washing down to the sports complex, and the Town will replace the pipe for approximately $15,000.

The resurfacing of Tillery Road is expected to begin in October. Traffic delays are expected as motorists will be directed around the workers and equipment. The council-approved resurfacing is estimated to cost $25,000-$30,000.

The pick-up and drop-off lane at Vinemont Schools will soon be widened to three lanes. The council is hopeful that the widening, funded by the Cullman County Board of Education, will help ease traffic congestion around the school and from cars being backed up on Tillery Road in the mornings and afternoons. Nothing will change on High School Road.

The South Vinemont Trail will soon have a new nine-hole disc golf course for people to enjoy. The council approved $2,000 for the purchase of the baskets needed to complete the course.

Public Works Director Mike Graves reported that work is scheduled to begin on the new pavilion at the walking trail next week.

Spectators at the sports complex will see new additions for next year’s ball season. The council approved the purchase of eight sunshades for the bleachers at each field. The council will purchase and install the shades as money is available. The cost is $2,000 each.

In other business, the council approved a $200 donation to the American Legion Auxiliary and three payments of $6,641.47 each for a total of $19,925 to the Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation.
