HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Reports from the National Weather Service (NWS) Huntsville office (NWSH) indicate rainy days ahead with chances of dangerous weather for north Alabama, as the remnants of Hurricane Laura are expected to pass on an eastward path north of the state.

Thursday

The NWSH forecaster said Wednesday that, as Laura works its way through Louisiana and east Texas on its way toward the Ozarks, “Additional clusters of showers/thunderstorms may also move northward into the region from central AL, that may persist through early Thursday evening before diminishing.”

Friday

From late Thursday through the overnight hours, Laura will begin to track rapidly east from the Ozarks to the lower Ohio River Valley.

With that move, according to the forecaster, “rich tropical moisture” with rainfall of up to 2.25 inches will move to the southeast through the Tennessee River Valley region of north Alabama, “supporting numerous widespread showers and thunderstorms” from the outer rainbands of Laura, beginning shortly before sunrise on Friday. Flash floods and rising rivers and streams will be the most serious concern, but predicted weather patterns from late Friday morning into Friday evening could create small but strong supercell storms and tornadoes, though chances of those storms are smaller.

Temperatures should not get above the low 80’s on Friday, thanks to heavy cloud cover throughout the day.

Friday night to Saturday

Forecasters are less sure about Laura’s behavior Friday evening, but current models indicate a “fairly high” chance of precipitation “along with an attendant risk of flooding and tornadoes” Friday evening, with rain easing off early Saturday morning and through the day. A chance of rain will continue into the night, diminishing as time goes on.

Saturday night and following

The last remnants of Laura will be passing through the Tennessee and Ohio River Valleys Saturday night, taking chances of rain with them. Sunday will see a continuing, though small, chance of rain throughout the day, with temperatures dropping into the high 60’s overnight. Conditions for scattered rain and even thunderstorms will continue Monday and Tuesday.
