GARDEN CITY, Ala. – Garden City Shiner Shack, known locally as “Shiner Shack,” has been in business since 1990. It is family-owned and operated by Ronnie and Patricia Roberts, along with their grandson, Manager Kyle Chandler.

“My parents bought the store in 1990,” said Lisa Belcher, Chandler’s mom. “It was a small convenience store that sold very little snacks, drinks and gas. Later on, we started carrying minnows and some light tackle, and from that it has (grown) to be a great business over the years. His dad and I are avid fishers; we love to fish as much as we can, so we help him out in the Shiner Shack as much as possible, especially with the stock. We try and do all his advertising and so forth. But he has brought the business a long way since he has been in the business since the age of 13.”

Chandler said the Shack has a wide selection of live bait.

“We do live bait and tackle,” he said. “We have a large variety of live bait. We carry different kinds of minnows, tuffies, medium shiners, large shiners, small goldfish, large goldfish, worms, crickets; about anything you want to go fishing with, we have.”

A day of fishing can also work up an appetite. Chandler said his store has you covered in that department as well.

“We also offer Hunt Brothers Pizza, so if you decide to go fishing, stuff like that, call ahead and order pizza, we’ll do that for you,” he said. “We do burgers, sandwiches, all kinds of stuff like that. We’re like a one-stop shop; that’s what we went for.”

When asked if the COVID-19 pandemic has affected his business, Chandler said, “We actually have done better during it. We were one of the businesses that didn’t have to close; we were able to stay open. It actually benefited us.”

The Shiner Shack is located at 313 First Ave. S, Garden City, AL 35070 and is open Monday through Saturday from 4 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m.-9 p.m.
