COLONY, Ala. – The Colony Town Council on Tuesday evening voted to contract MC Paving, LLC of Hanceville to patch and repair damaged portions of Ward Hill Road, while discussing the need for repairs to other roads in the town including Colony Road, Twitty Lane, Johnson Circle and others. Councilman Melvin Hammond said that the Ward Hill project could be completed for $5,500. Along with the repair contract resolution, the council passed a resolution calling on Ward Hill Road resident James Ward to appear before the council and explain the need for repairs before work begins.

Other council business

  • The council discussed the problem of people entering the park, often by breaking obstructing posts and chains, and some people damaging the yard near the gym/community center with four-wheelers. Proposed solutions included “no trespassing” signs that would increase the legal penalties for people entering the property, metal gates and the replacement of wooden posts with metal ones. The council passed a resolution to have councilman Curtis Johnson get estimates on security measures and report back to the council by July 15.
  • After evidence showed the recently repaired Educational Complex roof is still leaking, though not as badly as before, the council voted to send a certified letter to the contractor. Town Clerk Patricia Ponder noted that documentation like the letter might be needed in the event legal action must be pursued.
  • The council voted to authorize Mayor Donnis Leeth to repair or replace a damaged water fixture at the Educational Complex that was reported by the contractor doing previous repairs.

While no immediate action was taken, the council discussed:

  • Speeding through town. Council members talked about increasing the number of speed limit signs, as well as the possibility of speed bumps. Mayor Leeth said he would contact County Commissioner Garry Marchman for advice.
  • Leeth said he opened the gym last Wednesday and Sunday by special request, and users have been behaving and cleaning up after themselves. Hammond told the council he is working on a set of gym rules.
  • Johnson said he hopes to reopen the library later this week.
  • Mayor Leeth and Councilwoman Ethel Alexander will be back out this Saturday, taking census efforts door-to-door around the community.

The Colony Town Council meets for work sessions at 5 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, with regular council meetings following. The public is welcome.
