CULLMAN, Ala. – On Monday, the City of Cullman announced that its storm shelters on Sportsman Lake Road across from the Cullman County Fairgrounds will now feature a space open to families with small pets.

At Monday evening’s City Council meeting, Police Chief Kenny Culpepper explained, “We have converted part of the Sportsman Lake tornado shelter into a pet-friendly shelter, like we talked about. We’re looking, not forward to having tornadic weather, but if we do, to being able to accommodate, at least on a limited basis, some people with pets.”

Smaller pets only

Culpepper cautioned, “Because it is a shelter designed for people, they will have to have their own pet carrier to carry the pet, and it’s primarily going to be small pets that they can either hold the carrier in their lap, or slide it underneath the bench.”

Each of the City’s shelters, at Sportsman Lake on the north side and the Beech Center on the south, will have a police officer and a paramedic onsite when they are open, to assist anyone with special needs or medical conditions. At the Sportsman Lake shelter, according to Culpepper, residents with pets should wait to enter until they have received instructions from the officer on duty.
