HANCEVILLE, Ala.- Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail at this week’s Hanceville City Council meeting fought back tears before speaking to the citizens of his city about the upcoming Easter weekend.

“I know that there’s folks out there that’s really down about all of this and there’s folks with lots of depression going on,” he said. “Let me just say, if you need to call and talk to somebody, call somebody. My number is out there. Call me and I will be glad to talk to you 24-7.”

He continued, “It pretty much all starts tomorrow and what other better time is there that we can look for tomorrow for our hope of what happened on Sunday three days later. I would encourage everybody to think about that. Think about this time and what’s going on and that our Lord died and rose three days later. That shows us that we’ve got hope. Don’t sit around and despair and get depressed or whatever. Call somebody, check on your neighbors, check on the elderly. If you need help, like we’ve said many times before, call city hall.”

He then said of the city council, “I’ve got to say, the city council has not once complained to me. They have supported 100% everything that we have tried to do to support the community and help people and to get things that you need. We have done things we typically usually don’t do, but this is not a typical time. We are going to continue to do that and I appreciate the support of the city council, supporting the employees and supporting us trying to do the right thing.”

Nail did report that two City employees were tested for COVID-19.

He said, “We are still waiting on the results of that. We took all precautionary measures with that.”

He added, “We don’t know everything. If there’s anything you guys can think of that we need to be doing more or things we are not doing or whatever, we are wide open. Just tell us what you’re thinking. We are just trying to protect our employees and trying to protect our city.”

The City asks residents of Hanceville with City of Hanceville garbage cans to please put them out by the road for public works to collect. The cans are currently being replaced with large garbage cans from the County as they transition to automatic garbage collection.

Councilwoman Kim Brown asked that citizens keep Hanceville Nursing Home and other senior care facilities in mind as these facilities continue to run low on Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer and other disinfecting products.

She explained, “(Cullman County Schools Superintendent) Dr. (Shane) Barnette had all the teachers clean out classrooms of their hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes and all that stuff and to donate them to medical facilities. When I got to Hanceville Nursing Home, they were completely out of Clorox wipes.”

She said that she was able to leave the facility with 100 containers of wipes along with sanitizer, but it will likely need more soon.

The King’s Gold concert has been rescheduled for Oct. 10.

The mayor plans to continue giving updates and answering questions via Facebook Live throughout the COVID-19 emergency order. The next scheduled city council meeting is April 23 at 4 p.m. Due to restrictions on public gatherings, the public is asked not to attend. Meetings will be available to view on Facebook live.
