CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE) introduced a new classroom and facility disinfecting system this week as a proactive measure ahead of this year’s flu season. The Clorox Total 360 system uses a non-bleaching Clorox chemical formula with an electrostatic charge and a fogging sprayer to provide complete coverage of classroom equipment and furniture in a single step.

According to the manufacturer, treatment by the system:

  • Kills 99.9% of bacteria in 5 seconds
  • 44 organism claims: Kills cold and flu viruses, MRSA and norovirus in 2 minutes or less
  • One-step disinfecting
  • Eliminates odors
  • Sanitizes soft surfaces
  • Inhibits the growth of mold and mildew for up to 7 days

The 2017-18 school year saw the entire county system shut down for days at a time with more than 1,000 students absent and not enough substitutes available to cover the number of teachers and bus drivers out sick. The situation improved during the 2018-19 year, and Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette intends for the new measure to give CCBOE facilities as clean a bill of health as possible this season.

Said Barnette, “Our biggest thing is we truly believe it’s hard for kids to learn if they’re not in class. And if we can keep sickness down, keep sickness from spreading, our attendance is going to be better; kids are going to be in class, they’re going to learn more.

“We’re really excited about this Clorox apparatus, because it creates a fog that coats every desk. It can do any type of texture, if it’s cloth or if it’s hard surface, and it’ll coat underneath it, the sides of it, the top of it without leaving any residue or anything to breathe in. It’s bleach-free.

“We’re just really excited that they can use this, and within two minutes, it’ll kill the flu virus and many other germs. The kids can re-enter, they can touch the surfaces and everything within two minutes. And there’s not many other-even Clorox Wipes-it won’t dry within two minutes. We’re really excited about that. We think it’s going to help us, help our attendance and help our learning.”
