CULLMAN, Ala. — Jay Jones, President of Grace Place Board of Directors, presented the Cullman County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments with ways to effectively communicate with dementia sufferers in difficult circumstances at their September 12 meeting.

Jones covered the five most prevalent types of dementia and how people with them may act or react in crisis situations. He then showed the attendees methods to calm and comfort those suffering from the various diseases and how to try to get as much needed information as possible.

Volunteer fire department members, as first responders, may encounter people with dementia in traffic accidents, fires, storm damage, medical emergencies and numerous other instances. Because of the effects of the different diseases, it is vital for the responders to determine as much of their condition as they can.

Jeff Byars, the association’s EMS Officer, was very pleased with the information Jones shared. He said he would be recommend having this presentation for next year’s state-wide convention.
