CULLMAN, Ala. – Two people were arrested Wednesday in connection with the Dec. 10, 2018 crash that took the life of April Dawn Landinger, 30, of Hanceville. Terry Autwell, 28, also of Hanceville, was charged with criminally negligent homicide and failure to the yield right of way, and Skylar Higgins, 20, of Hayden is facing charges of criminally negligent homicide and exceeding reasonable and prudent speed.

The two-vehicle crash happened at Cherokee Avenue Southwest and 24th Street Southwest (just south of the National Guard armory). Landinger was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in a 2002 Hyundai Sonata driven by Autwell. The Hyundai was traveling southbound on Cherokee Avenue and attempting to turn left onto 24th Street when it was struck by a 2006 Ford Explorer coming northbound on Cherokee Avenue, driven Higgins. Autwell failed to yield the right of way.

Autwell was transported to UAB Hospital with serious injuries. Higgins was transported to Cullman Regional with minor injuries.

Cullman Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigator Sgt. Joey Duncan told The Tribune, “The Traffic Homicide Unit was called out to investigate it since it was a two-vehicle crash with a fatality. That crash resulted in the death of a front seat passenger, which was April Landinger, and she was from Hanceville, Alabama. She was riding in a 2002 Hyundai Sonata vehicle. After the crash investigation was complete, it was discovered human error was involved through improper driving actions, which resulted in her death. The case was presented to the court, and warrants were issued for both drivers involved in the crash.”
