CULLMAN, Ala. – Col. Ken Brown from Cullman Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2214 spoke Wednesday afternoon at the Cullman County Mayors and Commissioners Association luncheon at Terri Pines. Several area mayors, along with Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, were in attendance as Brown asked for their help in promoting appreciation for local veterans and the importance of Veterans Day events in November.

Brown explained, “We have 7,000 veterans in Cullman County according to the local VA. That’s a large number of veterans, and almost every family is affected by having a veteran. In a country where we have 340,000,000 Americans and only 1% having served in the armed forces, having 7,000 in your county as constituents is unusual. (We are) very patriotic here in the South.”

Every year the VFW helps host a day-long celebration honoring local veterans. It is held a week before Veterans Day each year to avoid competing with larger neighboring cities that hold similar events. The last couple of years, the event has been held at Cullman Regional Airport, but due to construction, this year’s celebration will take place at Sportsman Lake Park.

Brown told the assembled guests, “I am coming before you today because I want to talk to leaders in the community and you are the leaders.”

He said he hopes each municipality will do its part to help promote the celebration and encourage everyone to come out to show appreciation for the many remarkable veterans in Cullman County.

“I think when people understand a little bit more about the heroes who live among us that deserve to have someone come out one day a year and we have this celebration, (they will come),” said Brown. “It’s important as leaders to make sure people know about it.”

This year’s Cullman County Veterans Day Celebration will take place Nov. 2 at Sportsman Lake Park.
