HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Eight teams and their fans from around Cullman County gathered at Hanceville High School’s Lane Horton Gymnasium Saturday for the second annual Life Lines 4 Thin Lines Dodgeball Tournament. Teams representing the fire departments of Good Hope, Hanceville, Crane Hill, Johnson’s Crossing and Logan, along with Cullman EMS and others, took to the court to fling, sling and duck to the last player standing. In the end, Crane Hill’s Team Firebug took the top prize, defeating Johnson’s Crossing for the title of 2019 dodgeball champion.

The true winners, though, are Cullman County’s emergency responders, and Smith Lake’s departments in particular, through Life Lines 4 Thin Lines.

Event coordinator Kaitlyn Thacker told The Tribune, “Life Lines 4 Thin Lines is a local nonprofit that was formed for first responders in our community. That includes police, fire, EMS, dispatch, anyone in the first responder community: volunteer, paid, it doesn’t matter. We just wanted to have an outreach for us to have a place to come together, have common ground, help each other out, whether it’s mental health, financial health, emotional health. You know, whatever it is, we want to have something for that.”

The event raised $1,314 after expenses. The money will be divided between Logan Fire and Rescue’s fire boat program and the Life Lines 4 Thin Lines general fund.

Thacker extended her group’s thanks to Outlaw Sounds for donating DJ services, Chick-fil-A for donating sandwiches, Pepsi for donating drinks and Hanceville High School for the use of its gym.
