HANCEVILLE, Ala. –  The Hanceville City Council Thursday night took steps to begin the application process for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the construction of a new senior citizens building at C.W. Day Park.

The council voted to accept a proposal from Community Consultants for administrative services in the application process. It previously invited architects to submit proposals for the project. Two architects responded: Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc. and Tim Burney Architects. Council members asked for more time to review the architects’ proposals and voted to table the decision until its next meeting June 27.

With Mayor Kenneth Nail unable to attend, Jim Sawyer, mayor pro tem, led Thursday’s meeting. The council approved the payment of an invoice from Inline Electric Supply Co. for $3,704 for work done on the new stage at Veterans Park.

Sawyer explained, “We did have an overrun on the stage, but we also got excess money back on the pavilion that was destroyed so that money will be applied to the overrun on the stage.”

The council set three public hearings for its July 11 meeting:

– A request for property at 1205 and 1217 Commercial St. SE to be rezoned as R-1, residential. The property is currently zoned as B-1, local shopping district.

– To amend Ordinance 510 to include dormitories. The ordinance would allow for dormitories in areas zoned as R-2 (medium density residential), R-3 (high density residential), B-1, B-2 (general business), 1-D (institutional) and M-1 (light industrial) Dormitories would be conditional in R-4 (townhouse residential), A-1 (agricultural) and M-2 (general industrial) zones. The ordinance defines dormitories as “A residence hall providing sleeping rooms, bathrooms, study and recreational rooms and a common kitchen or kitchens in one or more rooms for occupancy by students of an established college, university or similar education institution with full-time live-in resident supervisor assistant to provide support services and oversight of occupants.”

– A request for the property of John and Teresa Preiss to be rezoned to R-3; the property currently has one section zoned R-1 and another zoned B-1. The request would allow for the construction of duplexes.
