CULLMAN – A Cullman man is facing criminal charges after wrecking a vehicle at the Johnson's Pure gas station on U.S. Highway 278, just east of St. Bernard Preparatory School, and attempting to fight a Cullman Police officer. The incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday.
According to Cullman Police Traffic Homicide Investigator Joey Duncan, "This gentleman was headed westbound on 278 into Cullman, and he just drove off the right side of the roadway, and went between a gas pump and power line pole and collided with the fixed, tall sign here at the Johnson's Pure gas station. The officer went to check on him, and he became very aggressive. He started being offensive, and the officer placed him under arrest, and he's been transported to Cullman Regional for treatment of his injuries."
Duncan identified the driver as Scotty Wayne Bagwell, 37. He said the officer who witnessed the accident and made the arrest was Jake Lambert.
"It's obviously still under investigation," said Duncan, "but it appears (Bagwell) might be under the influence of some type of substance."
Duncan said Bagwell's injuries were minor.
"He was very lucky because he actually went between a guy pumping his gas at a gas pump and a power line pole. He was very lucky," Duncan said.
Bagwell has been charged with DUI, disorderly conduct and improper lane usage.
