BREMEN – It was a busy slate of games at Cold Springs tonight as the Eagles and Lady Eagles took on Locust Fork.

Cold Springs 42, Locust Fork 38 (JVG)

The Cold Springs' JV girls came away with a very hard-fought win over the Lady Hornets. They will travel to Good Hope next Thursday.

Locust Fork 39, Cold Springs 17 (JVB)

The Cold Springs' JV boys got off to a very slow start as Locust Fork jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Trentan Williams hit a layup for the Eagles' first basket of the game at the 1:46 mark of the first quarter, but they were looking at a 12-2 deficit after one, and the deficit widened to 22-7 at the half.

They never stopped fighting despite the deficit, and they got a buzzer-beater from Roberto Ayala before the end of the third quarter to bring some good news to the Eagles despite trailing 36-12 after three; the Eagles wound up on the wrong end of a 22-point defeat.

Ayala led the Eagles with five points. David Alexander had four points. Hunter Freeman, Brodi Williams, Trentan Williams and Evan Wren all ended up with two each. The Eagles will take on St. Bernard in a home match up next Tuesday.

It was a tale of two halves for the Cold Springs Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles didn't get off to a good start as Rachael Baker got a layup, then a steal, then another layup to give the Lady Hornets a quick 4-0 lead. Neely Ellison quickly answered with a trey from the left wing, starting an 8-0 run for Cold Springs, as Aubrey Negron (two) and Toni West (three) also chipped in for the Lady Eagles as they took an 8-4 lead. After Elizabeth Hill scored to make it a 12-9 game for Cold Springs, four quick points by Locust Fork's Shelva Bailey and Jayleigh Tawbush gave them the lead right back at 13-12 after one.

The second quarter was dominated from the free-throw line for Cold Springs as their offense was out of sync, but four free throws by Hill, two by West and one by Ellison, plus an Ellison layup, gave the Lady Eagles a 21-18 halftime lead in what was a sloppy, but effective, first half.

In the second half, things went from good to really bad in a hurry for Cold Springs after a Kinley Campbell long jumper made it a 23-20 game. It was all Lady Hornets from there as they forced seven Lady Eagle turnovers and outscored them, 15-2, the rest of the way to turn a three-point Cold Springs lead into a 35-25 Locust Fork lead after three. And it got worse for the Lady Eagles in the final quarter as some passes found the hands of the Locust Fork players and they converted them into points. But the Lady Eagles never stop fighting and kept playing until the final buzzer sounded. Cold Springs, in the second half, was outscored, 33-9, a four-game winning streak coming to an end.

The Lady Eagles fall to 12-9 on the season. They played their fifth straight game without one of their star players, Camryn Crider, who is recovering from an ankle injury, but they are hopeful that she will play on Monday against Colbert County at Wallace State.

Hill ended up with 10 points, three rebounds, five steals and a block to lead the way for Cold Springs. West finished with seven points, five rebounds and two steals. Ellison ended up with six points, two rebounds and a steal. Campbell had five points and four rebounds, and Aubrey Negron finished with two points and six rebounds.

Locust Fork 54, Cold Springs 34 (Boys)

The Hornets' Drew Rogers and the Eagles' Hunter McClendon each got their team's first basket of the game, but it was all Hornets after that as they had five players score in the opening quarter, and Cold Springs trailed 18-4 after one. Adam Hill and James Byrd each had four points in the second quarter for the Eagles to give them a little bit of a spark, but they still found themselves down, 33-12, at the half.

Matthew Peed gave Cold Springs a big spark in the third, scoring eight out of the 10 points in the quarter, but Locust Fork kept the pressure on, taking a 45-22 lead after three. Cold Springs got a little bit of a lift from Carson Garmon off the bench, as he scored seven points, and the Eagles outscored the Hornets, 12-10, in the quarter. They kept fighting until the final buzzer sounded, but came up short, 54-34.

Hill finished with nine points and four rebounds for Cold Springs. Peed ended up with eight points and two rebounds. Garmon had seven points and added a steal. Byrd had four points and two rebounds. McClendon had four points as well, along with six rebounds and a block, and Francisco Ayala had two points and a steal. The Eagles will finish out their three-game home stretch with a game against St. Bernard next Tuesday.
