HANCEVILLE – Thursday's meeting of the Hanceville City Council was short, but saw some important decisions and ideas take shape.

In the way of finances, the council approved an expenditure of $4,800 to buy eight new bulletproof vests for the police department. The council also paid a $48,000 invoice for workman's compensation insurance. Mayor Kenneth Nail also brought up the need to expand the budget for renovating and repairing the public library, although no motions were formally made.

The council discussed the formation of a new town committee to oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the cemeteries, with Watson Cemetery being mentioned specifically. The Cemetery Rehabilitation Authority would be in charge of cleaning up the cemeteries and would have its own authority on how tasks should be handled. Since appointing people to this committee was not on the council's agenda for tonight, they decided to start making a list of possible candidates and save appointments for the next council meeting.

Nail notified the council of some recent repairs on sidewalks, and the members voted to approve the minutes from the Dec. 22 and Jan. 5 special meetings before the meeting was adjourned.

The Hanceville City Council meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
