WEST POINT – The Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) awarded a $50,000 check to West Point High School Principal Heith Yearwood today to go toward repairs and updates for the school’s football field and track.

Surpassing its usual $12,000 grant limit, the CCCDC and one of its commissioners Bradley Williams felt the $50,000 award was needed for the school and the West Point community.

Williams shared, “As a member of the CCCDC, I always look for projects like this at West Point that will be beneficial to the community and also have a huge impact for economic impact.”

Noting the work that has been done previously to tide the track over and the project the grant will help, Yearwood shared with the presentation attendees, “Since the last time we talked to y’all, you can see we’ve patched every hole and crack. Our maintenance guy and his workers patched every one and sealed the best they could. There’s still a couple of spots on the edge where it’s falling off. That’s where we’re going to work on it. We’ll put a safety fence along the front so that people aren’t on the field during the games.”

State Rep. Corey Harbison, R-Good Hope shared, “Any time we can do community improvement projects like this to draw people into this community, it’s a good thing. It creates tax dollars back to the local stores. It creates tourism back into Cullman County, gas tax and is an investment in the community and it’s an investment in Cullman County.”
