CULLMAN – On Saturday, April 9, Werner’s Trading Company hosted the 11th Annual Colton’s Cookout for a Cure to benefit the Colton Evans’ Cteam for Relay For Life. The event featured BBQ, chips, deep-fried hot dogs and French fries and was sponsored by Comfort Care Hospice, Werner’s Trading Company, Ted Calvert State Farm Insurance and Mitch Smith Chevrolet.

Colton Evans was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 9 and passed away when he was 17. He battled a brain tumor for eight years. He left behind a town who will never forget his courage and strength; he was loved by many. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

“Today we are finding a cure for cancer, we are fighting cancer and we have a lot of different programs to offer, too,” said Haley Marecle, Relay For Life Cullman.  “Colton was a dear friend of Elena’s,” she pointed to a woman under the BBQ tent. “He was young and passed away from cancer and they have been fighting for him ever since. This is a team that they started in honor for him. They do a huge, huge number of luminary bags in his honor. When you come out to our luminary event, you will see his section. All luminaries are for people in memory of or in honor of.

“Relay For Life is the largest fundraising event of the American Cancer Society,” Marecle continued. “This is one of our longest (oldest) teams; it’s called Cteam (Colton’s team), and this is their annual cookout; they always have a big turnout,” she smiled.

“The Relay For Life event itself is May 6 from 6 p.m. until midnight at the Cullman County Fairgrounds. We would love for everybody to come out and bring the kids. We’ve got a lot of different contests; we’ve got a lot of different teams doing fundraisers and of course come out and celebrate all the survivors, the caregivers, anyone who is currently fighting cancer and those who have suffered a loss from cancer.”

The weather was absolutely beautiful and perfect for being outdoors and cooking out. Lots of people came out and enjoyed the day as they raised money for cancer research and the American Cancer Society.
