WEST POINT, Ala. – West Point overcame an opening-set loss to defeat Fairview 3-1 Thursday, Oct. 1, capturing its second consecutive Cullman County varsity volleyball championship at West Point High School.

The top-seeded Warriors won 21-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-21, improving to 31-6 and extending their winning streak to 16 matches. West Point’s Laklin Shadix was named tournament MVP.

Fairview claimed the opening set 25-21, but West Point answered with a 25-20 victory in the second to even the match.

The Aggies built a 17-13 advantage in the third set before the Warriors rallied to take it 25-22. West Point then opened a 7-2 lead in the fourth, held a 21-18 advantage late and finished with a 25-21 victory to secure the title.

West Point reached the championship with a sweep of Good Hope in Tuesday’s semifinals, winning 25-15, 26-24 and 25-18.

Third-seeded Fairview advanced by outlasting Holly Pond in five sets. The Aggies won the first two 25-21 and 25-19 before the Broncos answered with consecutive 25-22 victories. Fairview claimed the deciding set 15-9.

Fairview 2, Good Hope 0 (JV championship)

Fairview swept top-seeded Good Hope 25-23 and 25-22 to win the JV county championship Thursday.

The second-seeded Aggies won both closely contested sets to complete a tournament run without dropping a set. Fairview opened with a 25-15, 25-10 victory over Cold Springs and defeated West Point 25-14, 25-21 in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Good Hope advanced by rallying past Vinemont in three sets. After falling 25-22 in the opener, the Raiders won 25-14 and 15-10.

Fairview also won the county seventh-grade and eighth-grade tournaments, giving the program three titles across the younger divisions. West Point finished as the runner-up in both middle-school divisions.

Shadix received the varsity tournament MVP award. Hanceville’s Kerrigon Moore received the Samantha Perdue Award, which recognizes a senior volleyball player for academic achievement, character, leadership and dedication to the sport.
