Cullman is expected to have a record breaking crowd attend the inauguration of James E. Folsom as governor of Alabama in Montgomery on Jan. 15, 1947. A large number will drive down for the day, however, a special delegation of around two hundred people will charter a couple of cars on the L & N, leave here on Number 1 Jan. 14 and return on the Pan American on Jan. 16.

The Cumberland Mountain Region of Alabama of which Cullman County is a part showed the greatest increase (40%) in sales in April over the same month a year earlier. Service Station sales led all others with a gain of 97.5% with lumber and building material 85.4% gain, and furniture, 84.6 per cent gain, crowding for second place.

In recognition of his forty years of faithful service as sexton of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Mr. Max Buettner was presented a gift of $50.00 at the Church’s Annual Fellowship Supper last week with the congregation president, Carl S. Arnold making the presentation. Mr. Max took over his duties as “door-keeper” for the church 40 years ago after having assisted his father with the work for eight years. He recently resigned his janitorial duties but will continue as church treasurer, a position which he has held for many years.

When “Naval-Military Honors Day” was observed at Georgia Tech on June 13, Cadet Lt. Col. Robert L. Peck, Jr. of Cullman was presented the Joseph Habersham Chapter of D. A. R. medal. To get this award Peck attained the highest rating for military Science and Tactics in the entire group enrolled in the Army ROTC advanced course at Georgia Tech.

“This furlough in Switzerland is wonderful but not half as exciting as the one I am expecting in August,” writes S-Sgt. Paul F. Lackey to his mother Mrs. B. F. Lackey of Rt. 1, Joppa. Paul expects to be leaving Europe for the States in August.

Here from Benton Harbor, Mich. this week visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Rodenborn are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Freeman and children Alan, Leonette, James and Marjorie Jean. They returned with Mrs. Rodenborn who had been in Michigan for a three weeks stay with them and her sons, Franklin and Neil Larson. On her trip north Mrs. Rodenborn left during the train strike and of course had to take a bus. She had to make six changes before arriving in Benton Harbor.

Representing the Cullman Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma at the state convention in Tuscaloosa on Friday and Saturday of this week will be Miss Evelyn Winn, the local president and Miss Beatrice Alexander.

Getting all spruced up for the summer were several shops on First Avenue East this week. Kuhns, Home Improvement Company, The Tribune, Mayo’s, Ward’s and Benefield Piano Co. all six got a coat of paint on Monday.

To assist taxpayers with that “always popping up” income tax a couple of representatives of the Internal Revenue office in Birmingham will be in Cullman at the Chamber of Commerce office each Wednesday afternoon from one until three o’clock. They will help with any problems of future income tax or past reports.

The Red Cross office issued a call this week for all volunteer workers who have given 200 or more hours to any type of Red Cross work to call by the office in the Kilpatrick Building and record. Some of the hours are recorded while others are not available. Certificates of merit will be awarded all having at least 200 hours so the Red Cross Chapter is anxious to get their records completed.

Grandmother Norris who has been ill for several days, is slowly improving.

This community was shocked Sunday when news reached here that Mrs. Jack Crumbley had died at 11:00 o’clock Sunday at a Mobile hospital after she was injured in a car wreck, Friday.

James Burnett returned to Birmingham Sunday after a weeks visit here and at Gold Ridge.

Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Henry and Mrs. W. D. Burnett spent Sunday night with the Henrys and the Coles.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cole and Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Cole visited Mrs. Jewel Ratts in Indiana several days ago. Mrs. Jewel Ratts is announcing the arrival of a daughter.

Mrs. Bulah Craft and Mrs. Tonie Scott visited grandmother Norris, Sunday.

J. P. Scott of Birmingham and Mae Dyer were married several day ago.

J. H. Oden of Birmingham visited Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cole, Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Vester Benefield of Gold Ridge visited Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Walker, Sunday.

Junior Partain spent the week-end at Athens, Ala.

Cold Springs News

Cold Springs Boys won the ball game between them and Brushy Pond Saturday.
