HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council, during the public comments portion of its April 23 meeting, heard from Cullman Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Alyson Stewart on the subject of child abuse.
“It’s become a popular subject, but not decreasing in numbers, unfortunately,” she said.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and one of the ways people raise awareness and honor victims of child abuse is by wearing blue. Stewart expressed the need for change, saying Alabama ranks in the top 20 states for child abuse reports.
Mayor Nolan Bradford signed a proclamation proclaiming April Child Abuse Prevention Month in Hanceville.
Following this, the president of Compassion and Hope Food Basket Ministry, John Skinner, requested permission to set up from Monday, June 15, through Saturday, June 20, for a tent revival at Tucker Park.
Bradford discussed a possible issue with Food Truck Night event being held at the same location, but assured something would be worked out. The council ultimately motioned to approve Skinner’s request, with an extra week if the revival has a successful first run.
The council moved on to approve bills and minutes from the previous meeting and address two public hearings discussed at the previous meeting.
- Ordinance No. 2026-6 zoning alternative for financial services was approved
- Ordinance No. 2026-7 for the vacation of Sherry Street was approved
Continuing new business, Councilwoman Kim Brown motioned for the library to surplus requested items listed to the council. Councilman Robert Powell seconded and all members approved.
Bradford addressed a pending contract between the Cullman County Public Library System and the City of Hanceville. Brown motioned to approve, and it was seconded by Councilwoman Jana Shelton. All members approved.
Councilman Cameron Rowe motioned to table discussion about a contract with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office. The council will pick this up at a later date.
About the city website, Bradford stated, “It’s been recommended we change the .net to .gov.”
Rowe stated, “I think it should be changed to .gov and don’t worry about the rest.”
Powell made a motion to allow Bradford to research the process of switching to .gov. Brown seconded the motion with no further discussion from the council.
