CULLMAN, Ala. – At the City of Cullman Planning Commission’s April meeting, Commissioner Michael Sullins announced the Commission would be requesting an updated Comprehensive Plan from the Cullman City Council.
“It is recommended by the code of Alabama that the Comprehensive Plan be updated every 5-10 years, and we are outside of that number. Therefore, we are overdue,” Sullins stated. “Statute 11-52-8 of Alabama Code requires a planning commission to adopt a master plan. What we are recommending is for the city to start the process of updating the plan.”
This plan will set the curve for the future of the city by progressing community development and addressing job demands, transportation plans, public utilities, diverse housing and much more.
Sullins made a point to express to the audience that the community needs to educate themselves about the plan and what it entails.
“The number one thing is educating the citizens. If we don’t educate y’all on how this process goes, it’s not going to be a good overall master plan,” he said. “We need to understand what’s important to our residents – that’s the key to this plan.”
Sullins advised that because this will be proceeding long after all the members are off of the commission, it is setting the tone for the city.
The commissioners approved a plan to present a request for proposal to the city council to hire the right consultants.
The City of Cullman Planning Commission will meet next on Tuesday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m. in the city hall auditorium.
