CULLMAN, Ala. –  A familiar name in the Smith Lake marina business has expanded its footprint, with Lynn Layton and Jeff Layton recently purchasing Trident Marina from Jeff Tolbert.

The father-and-son duo acquired Duskin Point Marina in 2018 and now operate two full-service marinas on Lewis Smith Lake.

According to a statement shared by Duskin Point Marina, the Laytons said their goal is to provide “the highest-quality marinas on Lewis Smith Lake,” noting that each decision has been made with the intent of enhancing the lake experience for the community.

“They were originally drawn to the marina business out of their appreciation for the beautiful lake we all enjoy,” the statement read. “Every decision has been made thoughtfully, with the intention of enhancing Smith Lake for each and every member of our valued community.”

Trident Marina, located in Crane Hill, offers a wide range of services including boat sales, repair, storage, fuel and an on-site restaurant. Duskin Point Marina, located in Jasper, operates with similar full-service offerings.

Following the purchase, marina officials said there are no current plans to add a restaurant or bar at Duskin Point.

“Not at this time,” Duskin Point Marina said in response to a question from the public. “It is our focus to provide the best marina service on the lake.”

However, The Grille at Trident Marina will continue operating under its existing structure.

“Mr. Tolbert continues to lease and run said restaurant at Trident and provide the same service that has come to be expected there,” the marina stated.

The announcement drew strong community response, with many expressing support for the Layton family and confidence in their stewardship of both marinas. Others raised questions about future amenities, including dining options and public access features.

For now, ownership has indicated its focus remains on marina operations and service quality as the transition moves forward.
