HANCEVILLE. Ala. – The Hanceville City Council at its last meeting announced a new city website will launch soon.

The key takeaways of the new website are:

  • If you need to know where to pay your light, water or gas bill the proper facilities addresses and their phone numbers will be listed accordingly. The same goes for vehicle and mobile home property renewal tags.
  • “Where do my taxes go?” is an available tab that breaks down tax distribution.
  • There is a staff directory that lists everyone that works for the City of Hanceville such as the mayor, council members, city staff, attorney and clerk. This also includes their contact information.

“Down on Main Street we had a light out and I didn’t know who to call,” Councilman Robert Powell explained. He said there is a form for outdoor reports and, for this situation, the Cullman Electric Cooperative would respond to the issue.

“The website should go live in a week,” Powell stated.

There are many features on the website that will assist residents with things like locating storm shelters, proper zoning and paying their bills, though it will also inform the public of local events, eateries and council meetings.

“One of the things we’re trying to get started here is, ‘Eat, Sleep, Shop, Local,’” Powell said. “Right now there are only two listed, but the idea is that every restaurant you can go to will be on here.”

Sunday alcohol sales

Next on the agenda Mayor Nolan Bradford reviewed Ordinances No.2026-3 and No.2026-4 with the council. These would allow alcohol sales in Hanceville on Sundays from 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

In public comments, some individuals suggested it wouldn’t be in the best interest of the city to have alcohol sales on Sundays close to churches, while others stated it will benefit city revenue.

The council said businesses have requested it to be approved so as to not negatively affect their revenue. Ultimately, the council motioned to waive the rules for No.2026-3 and No.2026-4 and the ordinances were approved.

Recognitions

The City posted to its Facebook page: “Tonight, the City of Hanceville had the honor of recognizing Hanceville Elementary School as one of the Top 25 Most Improved Schools in the State of Alabama, with an incredible 16-point increase in just one year. That kind of growth doesn’t happen by accident; it’s the result of hard work, strong leadership, dedicated teachers, and students who are rising to the challenge.

“We were also proud to recognize Lauren Bentley, who was recently named Cullman County Elementary Teacher of the Year. This is a well-deserved honor and a reflection of the impact she makes in the classroom every single day.

“Our schools are a vital part of our community, and achievements like these show what Hanceville is capable of when we work together. Congratulations to the faculty, staff, students, and families who made this possible. We are proud of you.”

Upcoming events

Joey Smith, owner of Smokin’ Joes BBQ, spoke before the council to suggest the Food Truck Night event be every Thursday from 4-8 p.m. starting April 2. He stated there will be food trucks in rotation each time so there is always something new for the public.

“I want to see something come into Hanceville,” Smith stated.

Bradford replied, “Absolutely.”

Food Truck Night will take place at Tucker Park.

The council motioned for the library to surplus a magazine rack and two tables, with funds returning back to the library.
