CULLMAN, Ala. – A local woman has been indicted on charges of first-degree financial exploitation of an elderly person, illegal possession of a credit or debit card, second-degree theft of property and first-degree attempted theft of property.

Cullman Police Chief Joey Duncan said that, after an extended investigation and grand jury indictment, Verna Hammons Jackson, 58, of Cullman, was arrested Dec. 5, near Main Avenue Southwest and Katherine Street.

“CPD Investigator Shannon Cheatwood and Officer Kyle Foshee conducted an outstanding investigation, dedicating extensive hours and effort to ensure this case was brought forward successfully,” Duncan said. “The Cullman Police Department would also like to extend its appreciation to the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance and strong partnership throughout this investigation.”

Local residents may remember Jackson ran for Cullman mayor back in 2012 and made headlines because she appeared on an episode of “The Jerry Springer Show” a decade earlier.
