WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Town Council on Monday, Nov. 3, held an organizational meeting and swearing-in ceremony. Members were seated on the town council and appointed to leadership roles for the upcoming term.

Since no candidate qualified to run for mayor in the August Municipal Election, and outgoing Mayor Gerald Schafer did not run for reelection, following state procedure, the newly seated council voted to appoint Timmy Smith as mayor. Smith had been elected to Place 4 in the August, so that seat is now vacant.

The council also elected Ashlee Phillips (Place 5) as mayor pro tempore. Returning council members include Darion Daniel (Place 2) and Steve Link (Place 3). Places 1 and 4 remain vacant and will be filled at a later date.

The meeting included recognitions for outgoing Mayor Gerald Schafer and Councilmember Frankie Jones for their service and dedication to the town.

The council voted to reappoint Dan Willingham as the town attorney and Joann Jones as the town clerk.

The council also voted to continue using the Town’s current depository accounts and adopted Robert’s Rules of Order as its official procedure for conducting fair meetings and decision-making.

Regular meetings of the West Point Town Council will continue to be held on the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at West Point Town Hall. The council opted to postpone the appointment of committees until the two vacant council seats are filled.
