A memorial service for Billy James Smith, 44, of Hanceville will be 6 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2025, at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel. The family will begin welcoming friends at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born on Sunday, September 6, 1981, in Cullman, Billy was a man whose hands and heart were always busy building, creating, and caring for others. From a young age, his strong work ethic and passion for life shined through in everything he did. He picked up a paintbrush at just eight years old, beginning a lifelong love of painting that reflected both his creativity and his patient spirit.
By the age of fifteen, Billy was already driving trucks, finding peace and purpose on the open road. He later worked as a skilled machinist for several years, always taking pride in a job well done. Whether it was through his work or his many hobbies, Billy had a natural gift for learning and doing. He took up karate lessons, played guitar with heart, painted beautiful works of art, drew detailed sketches, and loved to build things with his own two hands. One of Billy’s favorite times was early morning—driving as the sun began to rise. The quiet roads and the glow of dawn were therapeutic for him, offering moments of reflection and peace.
More than anything, Billy loved his two boys. They were his world, his greatest pride, and his deepest joy. He was a nurturer at heart, always ready to lend a hand, listen, or try to fix the problems of those he cared about. His kindness, determination, and love for life touched everyone who knew him. Billy will be remembered not only for his hard work and talents but for his big heart and the way he made people feel seen, loved, and valued. His spirit will live on through his family, his art, and the many lives he quietly and profoundly impacted.
Survivors include his two boys, Daltin James Smith & Coltin Phillip Smith; mother, Loretta Smith; brother, Gary Wayne Smith (Lisa); and a host of many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Willard Smith; brother, Ritchie Smith; and sister, Yvette Smith.
Hanceville Funeral Home is honored to serve the Smith Family.
