CULLMAN, Ala. — Cullman cut a fourth-quarter deficit to five points Friday, but Mortimer Jordan held off the Bearcats for a 35-23 road win.

The Blue Devils opened with a 90-yard kickoff-return touchdown and added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Cullman moved into Mortimer Jordan territory on its opening possession but turned the ball over on downs.

Mortimer Jordan extended its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run and another successful extra point.

The Bearcats answered before halftime when Colt Colvard connected with Grayson Gay for an 11-yard touchdown. Brooks West’s extra point cut the deficit to 14-7 at the break.

A 4-yard touchdown run and extra point pushed Mortimer Jordan’s advantage to 21-7 in the third quarter.

West added a 32-yard field goal in the fourth. Cullman later pulled within 28-23, after an onside-kick recovery by Kolby Holt during the quarter. Mortimer Jordan subsequently increased its lead to the reported 35-23 final.

Cullman is scheduled to travel to Huffman on Friday, Sept. 18, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
