CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman’s Oktoberfest season officially began last week, with the third annual Burgermeister Ball on Sept. 25 at St. Bernard. After a period of absence, the tradition was revived three years ago at the request of Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism, and serves as the kickoff to Oktoberfest.
Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce President Joey Orr said the event has continued to grow. “When we started, we quickly outgrew our first space. Now we’re thrilled to be at St. Bernard — it’s a fabulous setting. Each year, more people embrace the German festival idea, even dressing in traditional attire.”
One highlight of the evening was the passing of the Burgermeister medallion. Amy Wood, 2024 Burgermeister, presented the title to Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs. The Burgermeister serves as master of ceremonies for Oktoberfest and honors Cullman’s German heritage.
Wood reflected on her time as Burgermeister, saying it was an honor to represent the community. “Walking around and visiting with so many people who traveled to Cullman was such an honor for me,” she shared. “We should all be proud of this community and that we get to call Cullman our home.”
Guests who attended the ball were served a full German meal provided by All Steak Restaurant and participated in games such as a German spelling bee and Oktoberfest trivia.
Said Orr, “We are blessed to live in Cullman. We have wonderful people, and we have a lot to offer right here.”
Cullman Oktoberfest will take place Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 2-4 at Depot Park. Get a detailed schedule of events and more information at www.cullmanoktoberfestival.com.
