GOOD HOPE, Ala. — Good Hope High School’s Colby Pike will start junior year in August, and in this interview, he discusses his relationship with God, starting with a student camp that changed his life and many others as well.

“He has really changed my life here recently, because I’ve started going back to Daystar Church, and we just recently got back from student camp, and it was truly life changing. A few months back, I was in a bad place, which I know sounds cliche, but I really was, and the Lord, I feel, brought me to Daystar, because He knew how much of an impact it would have on me. I’ve recently started a student internship there, and it has been the best thing to ever happen to me. It has really changed who I am and my relationship with the Lord. I feel like I have a genuine connection with God now. I’ve always been a believer but never truly had an intimate relationship with the Lord, but ever since my internship, I’ve really grown in that area, and I’ve also grown as a leader. I’m so thankful for all of my leaders that have helped me grow in my walk. I’ve become such a better leader because of the Lord and because of them.”

Colby added,

“The student camp changed my life in so many ways. It grew my relationship with God so much and taught me how to lead like a Godly man. It also gave me assurance to my calling. I’ve been feeling called to youth ministry the past two months, but I didn’t know if it was what I wanted or what God wanted, so I kept praying over it and I prayed over it the first night of camp. Then, one of my leaders came up to me randomly during a worship and prayer moment on the last night and told me that I was going to be a youth pastor, which was honestly crazy, because I’ve been feeling like that’s my calling, and that just gave me the assurance I needed. I saw change in so many students. There was so much breakthrough, so many kids that gave their life to the Lord, and so many kids rededicated their life to God. It was awesome seeing Jesus move through so many students.”

Colby shared a couple of his favorite Bible verses, and mentioned that helping people find God is very important to him.

“The first one is Romans 12:2: ‘Do not conform to the patterns of the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is: his good, pleasing, and perfect will’. This verse means a lot to me, because it reminds me that the Word of God is greater than any attack from the enemy, and also, when you have the Word of God on your heart, nothing can get in the way of that. My second favorite verse is Philippians 4:6-7: ‘Do not be anxious about anything; but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus’. This verse means a lot to me, because it reminds me that whenever you are anxious about anything, the Lord will give you peace,” Colby said. “It is very important to help people of all ages find God, because Jesus calls all of us to be disciples of His Word, and go out and advance His kingdom with our actions. It’s important to be a role model for the younger kids, because I heard this quote a few weeks ago: ‘You could be the only Bible a non-believer reads’. It means that some people won’t ever open up the Bible, but by your actions and the way you treat others, a non-believer could see that, and question you about it, which would give you an opening to talk to them about a relationship with God.”

He has several Godly role models that he looks up to, and he talked about his favorite thing about being a leader.

“Drew Morton is a leader that I always know I can count on and open up to, and he has an amazing personality. Skylar Buck is our youth pastor, and you can just see Jesus moving through him by the way he brings the Word and his actions. He’s also a very trustworthy person. DJ Pool has become mine and my brother’s best friend. He was actually our team leader at camp and has brought us closer to the Lord in so many amazing ways and has made us such better leaders. He is also very fun to be around and very funny,” he said. “My favorite thing about being a leader is definitely the internship I’m a part of, because it has gained me so many lifelong relationships. It has helped me grow as a leader and my relationship with the Lord has grown as well. It has also given me people I can trust and open up to.”

Colby gave some advice to anyone that wants a relationship but is either struggling or new. His brother has been an inspiration to him as well and has helped Colby’s faith even more

“My advice to them would be to get in their Bible, and start reading it, because it is the truth. They also need to get in church and make relationships. The people you are around is who you become, so if you’re surrounded by like-minded people, then I think you will grow closer to the Lord, and you will also have trustworthy people in your life. A new believer probably hasn’t felt the Holy Spirit or seen God move through their life, but if they just get in church and get around people that are chasing the same things as they are, then they will start to feel peace and joy like they never have before,” he said. “My little brother is a miracle baby. They didn’t expect him to live, and if he did, they said he would only live for a maximum of 15 minutes. At this time, my dad was a youth pastor, and we got the church behind us, praying for healing. When my parents went back to the hospital to have scans done, everything was perfect. This grew my faith so much and really showed me that God is real.”

Colby spends every day reading the Bible and doing Bible studies is important to him. He has learned some important things during his walk with God.

“I’m reading the Bible every day now, and I’m studying Ephesians right now. I also like to try and get my friends to do a Bible study with me at least three nights a week. I do a Bible study with my girlfriend. I worship every day for at least five minutes, and I pray,” he said. “I think it’s very important. Joshua 1:8 says, ‘Keep this book of the law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful’. This doesn’t mean that you have to constantly be in the Word, but it does mean that we should be in the Word a lot, so that we are bettering ourselves to become more like Christ. Giving my life to the One that gave everything in order to save me is so worth it. You find true happiness and peace through this. No worldly desires will ever give you the peace that Jesus does.”
