CULLMAN, Ala. – Officials from Cullman Electric Cooperative and Cullman County recently met to discuss the transition of water and sanitation billing services from Cullman Electric back to Cullman County. After months of planning, both organizations have agreed on a tentative transition date of Sept. 1, 2026.

For the past year, both teams have worked closely to prepare systems, processes and customer support efforts to help make the change as smooth as possible for the customers impacted, the Co-op said in a media release.

“Originally, we hoped to transition all water and sanitation accounts in June 2026,” said Jeff Clemons chairman of the Cullman County Commission. “However, we believe taking additional time now will help ensure a more seamless experience for our customers when the transition takes place.”

While many parts of the new billing process are already in place, both organizations agreed more testing and preparation are needed before fully launching the change, said the Co-op.

“Both teams understand how important it is for this transition to go smoothly for our customers,” said Tim Culpepper, Cullman Electric Cooperative CEO. “We want to make sure every system is fully tested and any potential issues are resolved before the transition occurs.”

“Cullman Electric and Cullman County originally partnered in 2007 to include water and sanitation charges on Cullman Electric bills for a service fee. At the time, combining the services into one bill was considered the most efficient option for customers and both organizations,” said the release. “However, significant growth in the area, changes in billing and meter-reading requirements and rising operational costs have made it more practical for Cullman County to resume direct billing for water and sanitation services.”

Additional information and customer details regarding the transition will be shared as the Sept. 1 date approaches, the Co-op said.
