(Ret.) Abbot Marcus Voss (St. Bernard)

CULLMAN, Ala. – The monks of St. Bernard Abbey will gather with friends, alumni and the wider community on Friday, Feb. 6, to honor (Ret.) Abbot Marcus Voss for a lifetime of faithful service and leadership. A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at 4 p.m. in the Abbey Church by the Most Reverend Steven J. Raica, Bishop of Birmingham, followed by a festive dinner.

Abbot Marcus Voss, the 10th Abbot of St. Bernard Abbey, leaves behind a remarkable legacy shaped by humility, perseverance and a deep love for the Benedictine way of life. Over the course of his six years as abbot — and more than 61 years of monastic fidelity — he guided the Abbey community through a period of meaningful growth and renewal. Among the many milestones of his tenure was the recent renovation of the monastery building, a project that strengthened the physical home of the monks while honoring the Abbey’s historic foundation.

Beyond bricks and mortar, Abbot Marcus is perhaps best remembered for his gift of building relationships. He worked tirelessly to cultivate lasting bonds with alumni, benefactors and friends of St. Bernard, relationships that continue to sustain and enrich the Abbey and its ministries today.

The monks of St. Bernard Abbey extend their profound gratitude to Abbot Marcus for his steady guidance, generous spirit and lifelong commitment to God and community. This celebration offers an opportunity to give thanks for his many years of service and to honor a life lived faithfully in the heart of the Church.
