CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County voters face a more complex election cycle this year, with overlapping special elections and municipal contests scheduled for August. Cullman County Probate Judge Tammy Brown is urging all eligible voters to prepare early to avoid confusion and ensure their votes are counted accurately.

Although 2025 would have been a non-election year for county, state and federal races, two unexpected resignations changed that. Alabama House District 11 Rep. Randall Shedd and District 12 Rep. Corey Harbison both stepped down from their seats at different times, triggering two separate special elections.

Due to the timing of those resignations, the State House District 11 General Election is scheduled to take place on the same day as the local Municipal Elections — Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025. The State House District 12 Special Primary Election will take place Tuesday, July 15, 2025; the State House District 12 Special Primary Runoff Election on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025; and the State House District 12 Special General Election on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025.

“These special elections are district-based, not countywide,” Brown said. “Voters need to make sure they know which district they live in.”

Voters can verify their district and registration status by contacting the Cullman County Board of Registrars at 256-775-4750 or by visiting cullmancourts.org. Maps provided by the Legislature and available through the Probate Office offer a visual breakdown of current district boundaries.

Brown emphasized that only registered voters residing within a municipality are eligible to vote in that city or town’s municipal election, regardless of county residency.

“Jurisdictional boundaries determine who can vote in municipal races,” she said.

Adding to voter confusion this cycle are changes in polling locations. Voters who previously cast ballots at Hanceville City Hall or the Hanceville Civic Center will now vote at the Hanceville Senior Center for the State House District 11 General Election. Additionally, due to storm damage on June 7, the Kelley Community Center precinct has been temporarily moved to Friendship Baptist Church.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on election days. Voters must bring an acceptable form of photo ID to the polls. Valid forms include a current or recently expired Alabama driver’s license, U.S. passport, military ID, college ID from an Alabama institution, pistol permit with photo or various state and federal employee IDs. A full list is available on the County’s website and at the courthouse.

No additional requests are needed to receive a special ballot.

“When you go to your polling location, the correct ballot will be given to you based on your registered district,” Brown explained.

To keep voters informed, Brown’s office is using multiple outreach methods, including her official Facebook page, signage at precincts and coordination with local media. She encouraged residents to review sample ballots ahead of time, which are available online at www.cullmancourts.org/elections.html, the Probate Office and at www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes.

Election night results for both State House District Elections will be posted on the third floor of the Cullman County Courthouse.
