CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Historical Society met on Sunday, June 22, to discuss ongoing projects, upcoming events and local preservation efforts.

Julia Floyd of the Dripping Springs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented plans for a new patriotic monument at Veterans Park at Sportsman Lake Park. The memorial, featuring a bronze Minuteman statue and garden, will honor Revolutionary War patriots and celebrate the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The appearance of the Minuteman was discussed, emphasizing its representation of a typical farmer who dedicated his life to fighting for his country and honoring Cullman’s rich agricultural heritage.

Another announcement focused on the rededication of the Berlin/Kritner Cemetery, which was nearly lost in the 1980s but recently received an Alabama Historical Commission historical marker thanks to the efforts of Nancy Kuykendall and the support of local officials. The site, once used to bury local infants and families like the Turners and Glasscocks, is now protected and recognized as a place of historical significance.

Guest speaker Hazel Ruehl of the Heartland Quilt Guild spoke about Cullman’s thriving quilting culture, highlighting local guilds such as the Nimble Thimbles and the Heartland Quilt Guild. The guilds welcome members of all ages and experience levels who have an interest in quilting. Ruehl showcased a variety of handmade quilts, discussing their histories and the unique craftsmanship behind each one, and even displayed some prize-winning quilts that had been used in competitions. The Heartland Quilt Guild meets on the second Thursday of each month at Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church, where meetings are designed to share, encourage and instruct the skills of quilt-making with enthusiasm.

The museum also shared updates on new archival donations and discussed plans to resume the popular cemetery walking tours during Oktoberfest, with this year’s candlelight tour featuring a 1950s theme.

The Society is also preparing to participate in the United States Semiquincentennial Celebration and looks forward to increasing community involvement in local history initiatives.

The Cullman County Historical Society meeting is scheduled for July 27, at 2 p.m. at the Cullman County Museum.
