CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday showed its support for local arts by donating to the Cullman High School Theatre program, and by acting on plans to renovate the building recently purchased to house Cullman Community Theatre. The council recognized CHS for its first-place finish in the state high school theater competition, and presented the program a $5,000 check to help over 30 students and staff attend the International Thespian Festival in Bloomington, Indiana beginning on June 21, 2025, where they will perform “Charlotte’s Web” as Alabama’s official representatives.

The council also voted to apply to the Appalachian Regional Commission for funds to renovate the facility of the former Clark Street Church of God/Calvary Apostolic First United Pentecostal Church, located immediately east of Cullman City Hall. The City purchased the building in July 2024 to create a performance venue for Cullman Community Theatre and other performing arts programs.

Mayor Woody Jacobs took time to recognize outgoing volunteer Chairman of the Cullman Housing Authority Ricky Kreps for his 17 years of service, and to announce his appointment of Melissa Betts of The Link of Cullman County to fill that position.

Jacobs also recognized officers of the Cullman Police Department for their location and return of a large City-owned flower pot stolen from near city hall. Assistant Police Chief Brandon Patterson named Investigators Hunter Riddlesperger and Nicholas Watkins as the officers who used multiple means to locate the item and the person who took it, both found in West Point.

The council held public hearings for ordinances:

  • To rezone the Nguyen and Ha property located on Miller Street from R-2 Residential District to B-2 Business District. The council then held the first reading of the ordinance.
  • To rezone the Industrial Development Board property located at Alabama Highway 69 and Alabama Highway 157 from M-1 Manufacturing District to B-2 Business District. The council then held the first reading of the ordinance.

The council may act on both ordinances at its next meeting.

The council also held the first reading of an ordinance to authorize the issuance of a general obligation warrant in the amount of $5.515 million through the State Revolving Loan Fund for improvements to the City’s sanitary sewer system. Advised by the State to act quickly on the plan, the council suspended regular rules of order to pass the ordinance Monday evening.

The council approved a special event permit request from Amber Thornton of the Cullman County Public Library for a Summer Reading Kickoff Block Party on Clark Street from noon-2 p.m. on June 10, 2025.

The Cullman City Council meets next on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the city hall auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
