Rowan Hines, a senior at St. Bernard Preparatory School, is a student with her sights set on greatness. Currently ranked in the top three of her class, Hines has spent the last four years at St. Bernard excelling academically and athletically, embodying the school’s motto of balancing faith, learning and service.
Hines began her academic journey at Sacred Heart and Cullman Middle School before transferring to St. Bernard as a freshman. Her parents sought a more rigorous academic challenge for their daughter, and Hines has certainly risen to the occasion. She balances a demanding course load, including Advanced Placement classes in Biology, Literature, Government and Calculus, while also completing college-level English coursework.
Athletically, Hines shines as the only senior starter on the St. Bernard girls’ basketball team, leading her team as a guard and a versatile player. “I can play everything but point guard,” she said with a laugh, adding, “I don’t like to dribble.” Hines’ leadership helped her team secure hosting the area tournament for the first time since the late 1990s or early 2000s — a milestone she celebrates. Despite the grueling schedule of late-night games and early morning homework sessions, Hines cherishes the bond she shares with her teammates, whom she considers her extended family.
Beyond academics and sports, Hines dedicates time to serving her community. A volunteer at Hope Horses, a local therapeutic riding center, she finds joy in supporting its mission. “I love horses, and I love what they do,” she said. “It’s a blessing to be able to volunteer there.”
The oldest of seven children, Hines draws inspiration from personal loss. The tragic passing of her younger sibling due to a rare heart condition has driven her to aspire to a career in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. While she is still finalizing her plans, Hines is 90% certain she will attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to pursue her medical dreams.
Reflecting on her journey, Hines credits her experiences at St. Bernard with shaping her resilience and character. “Overcoming adversity has taught me a lot about life,” she said. “Believe me, I’ve had my share of challenges.”
Rowan Hines exemplifies the best of St. Bernard Preparatory School, demonstrating the power of determination, service and heart. As she prepares to graduate and begin the next chapter of her life, she leaves behind a legacy of leadership and excellence.
