
WEST POINT, Ala. – It was a packed house inside West Point’s Jim Boyd Gymnasium Saturday night as the Warriors faced off against the Brewer Patriots Sub-Regional matchup. West Point held the lead at the halftime and extended it to double-digits going into the fourth quarter, but Brewer went on a big run in the final period and ended up pulling ahead late to come from behind and knock off the Warriors 59-54.
Jaxon Shelton knocked down a pair of floaters and later added a free throw to give West Point an early 5-2 lead. Brewer scored the next five points to grab a 7-5 lead, but Maddox Chapman drilled a short jumper to tie the game up at seven. Both teams traded baskets for most of the quarter. The Patriots held a slim 13-11 lead late in the first, but a pair of baskets by Shelton gave the Warriors a 15-13 lead. Brewer banked in a jumper to tie the game up at 15 going into the second.
A basket by the Patriots gave them a 19-17 lead. Jay Lamar laid it in, then Cade Welborn and Gabe Vincent each knocked down a three to put the Warriors ahead, 25-19. A rebound and putback by Welborn made it a 27-22 game. A pair of technical free throws by Brewer cut it to 29-26 late in the first half, but late baskets by Chapman and Shelton extended West Point’s lead to 33-26 at the break.
It didn’t take long for the Warriors to add onto their lead. Chapman and Shelton each scored in the paint and Welborn drained a pair of threes to put West Point ahead 43-26. Lamar added a three of his own from the left wing to keep the Warriors ahead 46-30. Nolan Franklin added a late free throw to give West Point a 47-33 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Lamar buried a short jumper to make it a 49-33 game early in the fourth. That’s when Brewer went on a big run to get back in the game, as they scored the next 14 points to trim the deficit to just two at 49-47. The Patriots later drilled a three to tie the game up at 50. Lamar got fouled while shooting a three and ended up hitting two of three to give the Warriors a 52-50 lead with 3:42 remaining in the game. Four straight points by Brewer gave them a 54-52 lead. Chapman hit a big basket down low to tie the game up at 54 with less than two minutes to go in the contest. The Patriots, though, hit a basket down low to take a 56-54 lead, and they hit three free throws to help seal their 59-54 win over West Point.
Welborn and Shelton each finished with 13 points for the Warriors, while Lamar and Chapman each added 11 points.
