
CULLMAN, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) was the place to be on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, as the university hosted the 2024 Art Expo for High School Students in Wilson Hall. Elianna Hollis, a senior at Cullman High School, placed first in the Expo’s Works on Paper division.
Exceptional work was showcased from high school students in north central Alabama from the visual arts. Student art submissions were displayed on the UAH campus from Oct. 24-Nov. 16. The 2024 Art Expo culminated with a Saturday afternoon filled with activities that included tours of the art facilities for the student artists, active demonstrations of technology used in the arts, delicious food for the student participants and their guests, engaging interactions with the UAH Art, Art History and Design faculty members and an exciting awards program.
Student art judged for the competition included a wide range of mediums, including works on paper, painting, digital media and design, mixed media, 3D art and photography.
Awards of Merit were selected by a review committee of UAH Art faculty, led by Jill Johnson, department chair of UAH Art, Art History and Design. Honorable Mention, Third Place, Second Place, First Place, runner-up Best in Show, and Best in Show winners were announced during the awards program. Hollis’ entry, titled “Fade,” was a self-portrait drawn entirely with colored pencils.
Winners received certificates of merit and large art portfolio cases filled with a variety of professional art supplies. Hollis is the president of the CHS National Art Honor Society and is the daughter of Paul Hollis and Jill Bishop-Hollis of Cullman.
