CULLMAN, Ala. – Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 3-5, the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, hosted a K9 Detection and Tracking Seminar.

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said participants received not only classroom training, but also hands-on scenario-based training.

“I am very proud of the work being done by our K9 Unit here at the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office,” Gentry said. “Having narcotics and tracking K9s, as well as an explosive detection K9, is an invaluable asset for Cullman County. Around 40 teams participated in this three-day event. These teams came from all across the state of Alabama and from as far away as Louisiana. Various sites throughout Cullman County were utilized to provide a wide array of training opportunities.”

Participants were also given the option to be certified in narcotics detection, explosives detection or tracking through the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA).

CCSO Director of Canine Operations Matthew Bales is over the Cullman County K9 Unit at the CCSO and was one of the NNDDA instructors.

“I am grateful for all their hard work and dedication,” Gentry said. “I would also like to express my gratitude to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office for collaborating with us to make this training possible. I am so thankful to be able to host a training like this and to have such a great turnout. I am proud to say that we have one of the best K9 units in the entire state.”
