BAILEYTON, Ala. – The Baileyton Town Council at its Feb. 3 meeting talked sports fees and salary increases, decided to increase the former and forgo the latter.
Registration for youth softball/baseball/T-ball is open now through Feb. 28. The council discussed the rising cost of paying umpires and maintenance. Keeping in competition with other local recreation leagues, which it said charge upward of $80, Mayor Windell Calloway suggested an increase to Baileyton’s registration fees.
“I would like us to increase the price $10 per child,” he proposed. The Town of Baileyton offers a discount for families with multiple children participating. Rates are now $55 for one child, $100 for two children and $110 for three children.
According to Alabama law, every four years the council may vote to propose a raise for council members. February 2025 marks the beginning of a new term for the Baileyton Town Council, so the issues of a raise was presented.
Calloway made clear, “I am not advocating either way; I just have to make it known to you.”
Councilman Dewayne Sumner made a motion to proceed with the current pay rate without increase. The council agreed unanimously.
In other business:
- The council conducted a first reading of an ordinance concerning electronic ballot counters. The ordinance will be approved or denied at the March monthly meeting.
- Calloway discussed Baileyton Bargain Days. He stated, “The last Bargain Days did really well. We made over $5,000. We will have another one on March 1.”
- Sumner suggested working with the fire department to increase options for warming centers in the community in case of emergency situations.
The next Baileyton Town Council meeting will be Monday, March 3, at 7 p.m. at Baileyton Town Hall, located at 95 Fire Station Road.
